  • About Not Blogging

I’ve been even more irregular than usual in my blogging over the last couple of months. My excuse is that my company, Energion Publications, has been going through a transition which has kept me incredibly busy.

The transition is a good one. We were in a position to improve some of our equipment and tools and to add a couple of people as contractors to do some additional work. We now have a new copy editor, and we confidently expect great improvement in the editorial process as well as in final quality assurance. In addition, someone is working on Kindle conversions and will be moving to epub conversions for Nook, Google Editions, and the iBookstore. I had been trying to catch up with those, but with the production schedule, I was unable to do so. We saw the first release of the new Kindle editions yesterday, Rite of Passage for the Home and Church.

New tools include this new laptop I’m using to post this, as well as an upgraded desktop. Both items were very essential, as their predecessors were getting very old. In terms of tools, while we’re still using open source software, such as OpenOffice, GIMP, and Scribus for some things, I now have InDesign and Photoshop available to speed the process in many cases. I’ll be posting something about working with these tools over on my computer services blog. Don’t get the idea that I dislike any of the open source options. For what they do, they are good, but anyone who has had to lay out entire books (with footnotes!) will know the benefits of InDesign, I suspect. We’ve had contractors who have these items. Now I have them on my desktop as well.

My hope is that having both the tools and the people will give me time to work more on my own writing and also to blog more regularly. Speaking of which, I feel a couple of blog posts coming on.

  • Restoring Commas

Some of you may have noticed that I suddenly stopped using spaces after commas and some other punctuation. Well, actually I didn’t. The site theme was removing them for me due to a bug, which has now been fixed. So spaces after commas are back.

If you didn’t notice, don’t let me interrupt your routine!

  • Biblioblog Rankings for July

I thought they might not post a static list, since you can get it live, but they did, and it’s here. There are also a couple of notes on developing the library:

    1. Need for better hosting
    2. Possible peer reviewed bibliblog
Check out the post for those, even if you don’t care about the actual rankings.
  • Theme Updates

The WP Framework theme has been upgraded and broke my child theme, which included a few hacks. The new one looks like I can do even better things with it, but it will take me some time to code. In the meantime, I’ve put most of my normal widgets back, though all in the right hand sidebar.

  • Morally Crude Blogging?

John Hobbins thinks Jim West’s blogging style is “morally crude.” I confess that I find Jim West’s style mildly annoying, such that I don’t usually bother to read the most popular and prolific biblioblogger except on rare occasions, but he does hit the nail on the head at times.

I read somewhere that there are two types of bloggers-the linkers and the writers. Jim West tends to be a linker, with brief comments. Brief comments do tend to miss the nuances. John Hobbins and I are both in the writer category–we write longer posts on average (and John writes in a much more scholarly way than I do). We’re both less popular in the blogosphere by such measures as are available.

What do you think? Is the style morally crude? Is it perhaps some specific opinions, and not the approach to blogging? (Note that I do find the thread John linked offensive, but I’m used to skipping through things that offend me in the blogosphere.)

  • Life Application Bible Winner

… is Jay Silvas, who is also the sole qualified entry.

Despite having only this one entry, I’m happy with my plan for selecting a winner, because I think the comment itself was rather good, given the passage I selected. So congratulations to Jay. Send me your address (or I’ll request it soon), and I’ll send you the coupon for your free Bible.
