Um, Henry, a day or two ago there was another post on this topic, a brief one, pointing to another blog. I followed that link, commented on the blog, and neglected to check the subscribe to comments box. I comforted myself that I could always get back there via your Web, but now that post is gone. Could you give us the link again, please?

As someone who is spending about a decade of his life in grad school to become an expert in a field, count mine as a vote that gives a healthy respect for expertise. But claims to expertise are looked down on by so many people in society (which is why denialists have been so successful in so many fields: creation, big tobacco, global warming, homeopathy, and even the question of who wrote the plays of Shakespeare). It’s all there in the musical _Oklahoma_:

I don’t say I’m no better than anybody else,
But I’ll be damned if I ain’t jist as good!

The question is, how can we communicate our expertise without implying that we think we’re better than someone else? I really wish I had an answer.
