Both substitutionary and penal atonement theories are false. The common problem with both of these theories is the false conjecture of "in place of". No person can sacrifice another male person in place of himself and not be mandatorialy required by God to give God a direct accounting for the action of taking a male human life by bloodshed. Gen. 9:5b NIV. In the case of Jesus' crucifixion regarding that his life was taken by bloodshed, the Way was perfected for God to demand a direct accounting from each man too by the command REPENT Jesus has added. The only Way the Acts 2:38 command can be obeyed is by the faith to repent of the one sin of Jesus' murder for the forgiveness of ALL sins. All men are required to obey God but this comand is the only command that men must be taught to obey. Only a few people ever find the Way to obey this command for it is the only small narrow gate to enter for salvation. No other way of salvation is perfectable for each man too an only come to God by the faith to obey what Jesus has commanded. It is impossible for anyone to learn the Way to obey the Acts 2:38 command from the false conjectures of substitutionary or penal atonement. No man can get into heaven by a sacrifice but any man can get in by the faith to tell God you are sorry Jesus was crucified. This is the only Way acceptable to God.

Hi Henry - I don't hink I dare enter this fray - I am sure that people will find my writing distracting. But I have written a few thoughts on atonement, some in response to Crossan and his own critique of the implication of divine child abuse. If you are interested, see http://bmd.gx.ca/gmm.htm
